5 Points Improvements
Utility work progresses along the west side of North Fraser St. On Wednesday the 23rd of September Exchange Street will be closed for additional work. Simultaneously west Highmarket Street will open back up to provide access to Fraser Street. It is anticipated that Exchange Street will be closed for approximately 2 weeks to allow the water line to be installed.
On Tues. September 1st, both north bound lanes of Fraser/Church (Hwy 17) between Prince and 5 Points will be opened back up. However, the south bound traffic will be constricted to one lane. The Highmarket St. closures will remain the same as they complete the utility work.
Additional lane closures next week: August 22nd through August 25th. Lane closures on Highmarket Street from US 17 to Hazard will occur next week beginning next Monday August 22nd and ending as early as next Thursday August 25th. The existing detours on Hazard Street, Exchange street as shown on the project map will apply during these times. Follow marked detour signs.
Update: Work is still progressing on schedule with underground utility work in the northbound lane of 707/17 between Highmarket and Church Streets. It is expected traffic will be reduced to one lane northbound for about three more weeks. Highmarket remains closed due to water and sanitary sewer. Access to businesses remain open as signed and marked.
Update: The Fraser Street work / Phase 2 will actually begin 1/2 a block further to the south toward Prince Street than shown on the map. Work will progress north and should not close the entrance to any business. Duke Street reopened today. It is mostly a dirt & gravel surface that should be limited to through traffic (i,e, access to The Ice House).
Project remains on schedule. Jersey safety barriers are being put up to protect the workers. Crews expect to start transitioning to Fraser St. on Friday for Phase 2. Expect the north bound lanes of Fraser to be closed on Wednesday. Also, crews will soon begin work on the sewer line behind Burger King that ties into this project.
Project is on schedule. Work crews should be transitioning to Fraser Street within the next couple of weeks, which will allow Highmarket Street to reopen. However, the Highmarket road surface will be rough until SCDOT completes the repaving in the spring. Below is a link to SCDOT’s overview plan of the improvement project. We are working to get more information from SCDOT to share.
In advance of SCDOT’s improvements of Fraser Street (Hwy 17) between the Five-Points intersection and Highmarket Street, the City will begin relocating water, wastewater and electric utilities in corridor. The first phase of construction is scheduled to begin the week of July 13 with the closing of Highmarket Street between Fraser and Dozier. The project is anticipated to take until the end of October 2015, weather permitting. SCDOT’s work will follow and is expected to last until April 2016. The City will utilize this website to provide updates and notifications to help lessen the inconvenience.
